Don Stamey - Computers

macwisdom.com - This is my business web site. I am a software developer and web programmer.

How I got started in computers

I started programming computers in college, a few years before personal computers were introduced (my first contact with a computer was a DEC-10 main-frame). I majored in Business Administration-Finance, which required taking one introductory computer class. I enjoyed that class so much, I kept taking more programming classes, even though they were not required for my major. After a while, I had enough computer classes and got my degree in programming, but I still finished my original major. Even before I gradutated college, I began to realize that my career would not be in Business Finance, but in computers.

After graduating from college, I managed the data processing operation for a company in Los Angeles for two years. I then had an opportunity to become self-employed; which is something I had wanted to do since high school. I was involved with programming and consulting on large main-frame computer systems for various companies for about 4 years, until I designed a Macintosh business program which was very successful for over 10 years. In 2001, I began designing and programming for the web, and by 2007 had fully transitioned to being a web designer/programmer. It would be fun to write another Mac application, or an iPhone/iPad app, but there is so much opportunity on the web, I just can't fit it in.

I've been using a Mac since 1987. I started out with a Mac Plus (running System 5) with two floppy disk drives, and have owned many Macs since. Because of it's Unix OS foundation, it's a perfect choice for a web tech guy.
